HIGH SPEED CHASE OF BURGLAR ENDS IN 20 YEAR SENTENCE
Greenwood, MS—Marquellus Davis (21). of Greenwood was convicted of two house burglaries and one count of possession of a controlled substance in three separate cases in Leflore County following his guilty pleas on Monday, District Attorney Dewayne Richardson announced today.
On September 15, 2021, an officer with the Greenwood Police Department observed a small black car traveling at a high rate of speed on Leflore Avenue. The officer activated her siren and lights to stop the car however, the vehicle failed to stop and accelerated. The suspect’s vehicle eventually struck several vehicles, flipped and came to rest after striking the Alluvian building.
Davis was extracted from the driver compartment of the vehicle by the Greenwood Fire Department. Detectives arrived on the scene and discovered that Davis’ vehicle contained several guns, cash, coins and ammunition. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the items found in the vehicle had been taken during a house burglary that occurred earlier that day on Claiborne in Greenwood.
Detectives also discovered that Davis was out on bond for a previous house burglary that occurred on October 28, 2019 and for a drug possession charge that occurred in October of 2020. Davis was sentenced to twenty (20) years with ten (10) years suspended and ten (10) years to serve followed by five (5) years of post-release supervision in the Mississippi Department of Corrections on all three charges to be served concurrently. Davis was also ordered to receive Therapeutic drug treatment while incarcerated. If convicted of any further crimes, Davis will be considered a habitual offender.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Stanley Alexander who added, “every citizen deserves to feel safe in their homes from intruders.”
