WELLS SENTENCED TO TWENTY-FIVE YEARS IN PRISON
Greenville, MS—Geor’Barri Wells was sentenced to Twenty-Five (25) years to serve in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections stemming from his convictions for Second Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault, District Attorney Dewayne Richardson announced today.
Wells was found guilty by a jury of his peers at the conclusion of a three-day trial in July. His indictment arose from a deadly shooting incident in May of 2018 that left one man, Shaquille Townson, dead and a lady seriously injured. The investigation of this case began when officers of the Greenville Police Department were called to the lobby of the Main Street station in the early morning hours of Thursday, May 10, 2018 to assist a citizen who was frantically knocking on the door. GPD first respnders made contact with a man who had informed them that his nephew had just been shot on Walnut St. near the Greenville Inn & Suites. The officers rushed the half-block away and found Shaquille Townson deceased and being held in the arms of a friend. Inside of the hotel lobby, they made contact with Delnica Mason who had also been shot. The murder was captured on video surveillance.
Wells faced between twenty (20) and forty (40) years for the Second Degree Murder, and up to twenty (20) years for the Aggravated Assault convictions, respectively. Following a sentencing hearing on Monday, Judge Richard Smith sentenced Wells to thirty (30) years, with five (5) years suspended and twenty-five (25) years to serve for Second Degree Murder and twenty (20) years to serve for Aggravated Assault. The sentences will run at the same time.
The case was prosecuted by Kaylon McCou and John Herzog, Jr. and the District Attorney’s Office feels that the Townson family were mainly able to feel a sense of relief and justice because of the diligent work of our local law enforcement agencies and through the help of citizens being willing to testify and tell what occurred on this tragic evening.
