Laura K. Cooper is an Assistant District Attorney in Washington County.

Hailing from the heart and soul of the Mississippi Delta, “Laura K.” is a proud graduate of Greenville Public Schools. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, magna cum laude from the illustrious Tougaloo College while balancing student leadership, community advocacy, and part-time employment. She honed her leadership and advocacy skills at the University Of Mississippi School Of Law. There, she was inducted into Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society after ranking in the top 19% of her first-year class. She also served as the President of the Constance Slaughter-Harvey Chapter of the National Black Law Students Association and was recognized by Dean Susan Duncan as one of three Dean’s Distinguished Service Award recipients.

Laura K. returned to the Delta after law school and was the Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Debra M. Giles, Chancellor and Youth Court Judge of Sunflower and Humphreys Counties. She pioneered the YOUth Can! Empowerment Program and assisted with creating and coaching mock trial competition teams for Gentry High School and Humphreys County High School. Laura K. then became an Assistant Public Defender in Hattiesburg, Forrest County, Mississippi where her legacy of zealous advocacy and excellence continued.

Laura K. is honored to return to her hometown to promote justice and increase the quality of life for her community. She is still a member of New Jerusalem M.B. Church. A member of the Mississippi Bar Association, she was selected for the 2023-2024 class of Leadership Mississippi Bar. She is also an active member of the Magnolia Bar Association, where she serves as the Chairperson of the Annual Tougaloo Summit Committee and on the Board of the Young Lawyers Division.
