Jackie Jackson sentenced to 40 years

Greenville, MS –Washington County resident Jackie Jackson, pled guilty to Second Degree Murder, Armed Robbery, and Jail Escape in Washington County Circuit Court, District Attorney W. Dewayne Richardson announced today.

Richardson said, “Jackie Jackson was set for trial this week for his January 9, 2016 Armed Robbery charge, but instead he pled guilty before Judge Hines on today.” Jackie Jackson was indicted by the April 2016 Grand Jury for Armed Robbery, and had two pending indictments for Jail Escape and Murder.

Jackson along with 2 other codefendants robbed Tobacco City on January 9, 2016 during the early morning hours. Jackson’s Second Degree Murder charge arises from the discovery of Yolanda Jordan’s remains located inside of her home on July 5, 2016. On June 6, 2017, Jackson along with 2 other inmates escaped the Washington County Regional Correctional Facility but were later captured.

Judge Hines sentenced Jackie Jackson to the District Attorney’s recommendation of 40 years in the custody of Mississippi Department of Corrections as 35 years to serve, 5 years of Post Release Supervision to serve in Second Degree Murder, 35 years to serve in the Armed Robbery, and 3 years to serve in the Escape.

Pursuant to Mississippi State Law, defendants sentenced for Second Degree Murder and Armed Robbery convictions have to serve every day of their sentences and are not eligible for early release. The Armed Robbery and Second Degree Murder cases were investigated by the Greenville Police Department, and the Jail Escape was investigated by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

These cases were prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Takiyah H. Perkins and John Herzog. ADA Perkins stated that, “she appreciates the law enforcement agencies for their tireless efforts to make our community safe and business owners secure in operating their businesses. The District Attorney’s Office and Staff will continue to prosecute those individuals who are adamant about committing violent offenses. I would like to thank the Greenville Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department for their efforts in these cases.”

District Attorney Richardson added that, “the District Attorney’s office hopes that the family and friends of Yolanda Jordan receive some relief and begin the process of healing knowing that Jackie Jackson has had to answer for his criminal acts and justice was sought and rendered.”

Judicial Process

Citizen's Involvement in the criminal justice system typically begins with them being a victim, witness, or defendant of a crime. Arrests are made generally by a judge-issued warrant or by a police officer observing a crime in process. Law enforcement may also arrest someone if it has probable cause to believe the person committed a criminal offense. When individuals are arrested they are routinely advised of their Miranda Rights upon arrest, advising them that they have the right to remain silent and that anything they say will be used against them in court. On being questioned, defendants have the right to have their attorney present or to have one appointed if they are indigent.

Felony defendants appear at a first appearance and have the charges reviewed. A judge will inquire if the defendant has an attorney. If low income, the defendant may qualify for a court-appointed lawyer. No plea is entered at this time unless the defendant wishes to plead guilty or waives indictment and has an attorney present. All felony cases are presented to a grand jury in the county that the crime was committed. In the State of Mississippi, only a grand jury has the authority to indict an individual for a felony offense and require them to stand trial for the charges alleged in an affidavit and indictment.

If an indictment is issued, the defendant is bound over to stand trial or enter a guilty plea to the crimes alleged. When a criminal trial occurs all 12 jurors must find the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Sentences are decided by Circuit Court Judges in all criminal matters. In most cases a recommendation is made regarding imprisonment, probation, fines and restitution.
