COLEMAN SENTENCED FOR MARTIN’S MURDER

Dewayne RichardsonMississippi Delta DA 4th District

Greenville, MS—Geremy Coleman, 28, of Greenville, MS, pled guilty to Second Degree Murder for the killing of Lamarcus Martin on Monday, District Attorney Dewayne Richardson announced today.

In the early morning around 2 a.m. on August 4, 2022, witnesses scurried in fear as a gunman fired multiple shots near the corner of E. Union Street and N. 6th Street, just outside of Double Quick near the hospital. Eyewitnesses and patrons of the store found an unresponsive black male later identified as Lamarcus Martin lying near his brother’s vehicle. Although the gunman fled on foot after the shooting, surveillance footage captured some of Mr. Martin’s final moments as well as the identity of the gunman and his accomplice.

The evidence further revealed that after exchanging words with Mr. Martin, Coleman was handed a firearm, which he immediately used to shoot and kill Mr. Martin. Coleman was indicted for First Degree Murder enhanced by the use or display of a firearm. A week before trial, Coleman’s Defense Counsel advised our office of his intention to enter a plea of guilty. On Monday, Coleman admitted to killing Mr. Martin while engaged in an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved heart by shooting Mr. Martin. He pled guilty to Second Degree Murder in the presence of Mr. Martin’s family and was sentenced to 35 years in MDOC custody with 25 years to serve without parole followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.

Mr. Martin was a father of eleven (11) and lost his life for yet another episode of senseless violence. We appreciate the proactive work of convenience stores and restaurants who equip their premises with surveillance cameras. Through the collaborative efforts of witnesses, police officers, crime lab technicians, and good Samaritans, another family in our district gained justice. This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Laura K. Cooper and Kaylon McCou.
