Greenwood, MS – Demetrius Davis was found guilty on August 5, 2026, by a jury in Leflore County Circuit Court convicting him on all three counts of the indictment to include firearm enhancements, District Attorney Dewayne Richardson announced today.
On August 15, 2020 at approximately 10:25 p.m., Bernard Nichols was shot on Taft Street in Greenwood while driving his blue Toyota Corolla with his girlfriend in the passenger seat. Nichols was struck from behind during a barrage of gunfire from an AR type weapon and was pronounced dead shortly after at Greenwood-Leflore Hospital.
Officers of the Greenwood Police Department were dispatched to the scene and after reviewing surveillance footage at a nearby convenience store and home security footage from a neighbor on Taft Street, they were able to determine who was responsible. The arrests of Demetrius Davis and Toris Jackson followed soon after. Toris Jackson’s case remains pending and is scheduled to be tried at a later date.
The case against Davis was tried by Assistant District Attorney Trish Hicks and Amanda Sturniolo-Langford, who expressed their appreciation to the Greenwood Police Department and the officers who were willing to put in extra time and work to gather important details in this case. Hicks stated, “This murder was about ‘street justice,’ but our laws do not provide for that. No one is above the law, and justice should be for everyone. This case proves that. Although Mr. Bernard’s family had to wait nearly six years, we are thankful that justice could be served.”
Davis is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date to be determined by the Court.
