Greenville, MS— Dawton Whatley, 20, of Greenville was convicted of Grand Larceny and Aggravated Domestic Violence in Washington County following his guilty plea in May, District Attorney Dewayne Richardson announced today.
In March of 2023, Whatley was charged with Grand Larceny following the Greenville Police Department’s investigation into stolen equipment which revealed that he had taken over $1000 worth of property and equipment from the victim’s shop. He later posted bond and was released.
In February of 2024, deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office were called out in reference to a domestic assault. When they arrived on scene they were met by the female victim who had sustained significant injuries all over her body. She disclosed that Whatley had assaulted her and ran into a nearby field. Deputies searched the area and were able to capture him shortly thereafter. Whatley was indicted for Aggravated Domestic Violence and he was held without bond. Washington County authorities were notified that he was also wanted for a homicide in Madison County that occurred the day before he assaulted his girlfriend.
Whatley pled guilty in Washington County Circuit Court in May. He was sentenced to the District Attorney’s recommendation of ten (10) years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. This sentence will follow the twenty-five (25) year sentence he is serving for the homicide he committed in Madison County.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Kaylon McCou who extends thanks on behalf of the District Attorney’s Office to the Greenville Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office for their work on these cases.
