Greenwood – District Attorney W. Dewayne Richardson announced this week that Darriel Gilbert, 53 yoa, of Greenwood was convicted of Capital Murder and Kidnapping in Leflore County Circuit Court following his guilty plea on Friday, September 22, 2023.

On October 20, 2020, officers of the Greenwood Police Department responded to the scene of a shooting on Martin Street in Greenwood, MS.  Upon their arrival, officers found Angela Lee McDowell inside the home suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.  The victim, Angela McDowell, later succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to the hospital.

Witnesses informed detectives that Darriel Gilbert held four members of McDowell’s family at gun point while he waited for her (McDowell) to arrive home. Upon her arrival, Gilbert tortured her before eventually ending her life with the use of a deadly weapon.

For his crimes, Darriel Gilbert was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in the Mississippi Department of Corrections for the Capital Murder of McDowell.  Since Gilbert was a violent habitual offender, he was also sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the Kidnapping charge.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Stanley Alexander who stated, “The reprehensive actions of Gilbert were pure evil, I pray that knowing Darriel Gilbert will never terrorize another family nor ever be released from prison will bring some amount of solace to the family.”

The District Attorney’s Office extends our gratitude to the men and women of the Greenwood Police Department for responding and investigating this case in a timely and effective manner.  It is only through their hard work and dedication that Justice for Angela McDowell and her family was attained.
