Greenwood, MS – Denarius Weatherall of Sidon, was sentenced on Monday, November 3, 2025, in connection with the murder of Jimmy Prophett, District Attorney W. Dewayne Richardson announced today.
On Saturday, May 8, 2021, Jimmy Prophett was shot in his mother-in-law’s backyard after an argument between he and Weatherall’s brother. Witnesses at the scene recalled Denarius Weatherall appearing at the scene in order to confront Prophett. Shortly thereafter, Weatherall pulled a gun and shot four times at Prophett. Four shell casings were also collected from the scene. Prophett was taken to the Greenwood-Leflore Hospital but did not survive his injuries. Weatherall was brought in for questioning and gave multiple statements admitting to shooting Prophett.
Denarius Weatherall pled guilty to Second-Degree Murder and was sentenced to thirty (30) years with the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with twenty-five (25) years to serve in custody, the remaining five (5) on supervised probation upon his release. Defendants who are sentenced for the crime of Second-Degree Murder are not eligible for parole nor early release and must serve every day of their sentence in custody.
This case was prosecuted by Patricia A. Hicks who commended the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department for its diligent work to bring justice in this case, as well as her condolences to Mr. Prophett’s wife and extended family for the loss of their loved one.
