Greenville, MS— Wilbur Smith, 41, of Greenville was convicted for a pair of Armed Robberies committed four days apart, Attempted Murder, and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon in Washington County following his guilty plea in May, District Attorney Dewayne Richardson announced today.

In September of 2023, officers of the Greenville Police Department were called to a local package store in the 1300 block of Highway 82 in response to an Armed Robbery and Attempted Murder. Detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division responded and their investigation revealed that a masked Smith robbed the store and, as he fled the scene on foot, with money falling from his pockets, shot at a witness that attempted to follow him.

During the investigation, GPD received a call regarding a previous armed robbery at a store on Edison Street that may involve the same suspect. CID investigators retrieved video surveillance from both scene and analyzed them compared with known photos of Smith to confirm a match. Detectives also discovered physical evidence linking him to the crimes during a search of his car and home. He was later indicted for both incidents by a Washington County grand jury.

Smith appeared in the Circuit Court of Washington County in May where he entered pleas of guilty in both cases. He was sentenced to the District Attorney’s Office recommended sentence of thirty (30) years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections with twenty (20) years to serve and the remaining ten (10) years on Post-Release Supervision.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Kaylon McCou who expressed his gratitude for the diligent investigative work of the Greenville Police Department in quickly identifying and capturing this violent criminal.
